ASTD Pittsburgh - FAQ
ASTD Pittsburgh, a de-unified local chapter of the American Society for Training and Development, is a continually evolving and developing organization of more than 300 professionals. Challenged by changing roles and changing demands in today's workplace, the organization is committed to the development of a highly skilled, well-trained, internationally competitive workforce. ASTD Pittsburgh provides professional development and a support network for those who are in the training and development profession, as well as service to the community.
Why is the Pittsburgh chapter deunified?
All local chapters have de-unified from the National ASTD. Previously, the national ASTD collected their own dues as well as a local chapter’s dues from members who wished to join both organizations. However, there was no mechanism to transfer local dues to the local chapters, and many members found that they were delinquent in their local dues. By de-unifying, local chapters became able to collect dues directly from members, ensuring that maximum resources and funding are available at the local chapter level.
Who are the members of ASTD Pittsburgh?
Our Members include training and development managers, practitioners, vendors and consultants from area corporations, businesses, schools, and nonprofit organizations. Some are HR managers, others are business owners interested in learning more about training issues. We also extend special memberships at a discounted rate to graduate and undergraduate students pursuing careers in the training and development field.
How many members does the Pittsburgh organization have?
The Pittsburgh chapter has over 300 members and the number is growing monthly. We added an average of 50 - 60 new members annually.
What are the benefits of joining ASTD Pittsburgh?
ASTD Pittsburgh offers you a variety of quality programs geared to all types of members. We’ve invited best-selling authors as well as local business award winners to describe best practices. Our Annual E-Learning Expositions feature the best and brightest in the ever-growing E-Learning field. Membership in ASTD Pittsburgh pays for itself many times over. - Discounted Member rates for attending Chapter events. Some events have a Members-Only “Early Bird” rate as an added benefit for dues-paid Chapter members who register early
- Detailed job postings on our online job board, t & d jobs. Anyone can post a job or view job titles, but only dues-paid members who are logged into the website can view the postings.
- Our online membership directory, which enables you to network with other training professionals. You have real-time, 24/7/365 access to update your member profile; our e-mail and surface mail lists are updated routinely
- The Consultants’ Corner, which allows you to post information about services you offer, or search for a consultant in a particular area of expertise
- Member Benefits in the form of discounts on services, which are available to dues-paid members who are logged into the website

How many people normally attend your events?
Attendance ranges from 20-100, depending on the scope and format of the event. For our most recent E-Learning Expo, more than 150 members, guests, students, vendors, and presenters were in attendance. Some are large conferences, while others are smaller groups that are ideal for group discussions and shared learning.
Where and how often are the meetings held?
We sponsor at least one educational or social event every month, though we take a summer break, usually in July. Events are held at different venues throughout the Pittsburgh area.
If your company would like to offer space for an event, we will be happy to list you as the event sponsor if we are able to hold the event at your offices or location. All Event Sponsors receive two free passes to the event.
Those joining or renewing their ASTD annual membership have several options:
- Join only the Pittsburgh Chapter for annual dues of $65.00. A Student rate of $30.00 applies for full-time undergraduate or graduate students with proof of student ID.

What is the benefit of a student membership?
Those attending a formal educational program can benefit from the speakers and cutting edge learning that is presented at our events. They can also network with a variety of practitioners and learn about the area business climate. They’ll gain practical experiences that complement their formal learning.

If I change jobs, what happens to my membership?
Your membership is a personal membership and will stay with you through the year. When it is time to renew, the notice will be sent directly to you, not your previous employer. Be sure to update your online Member Profile if the profile contains your contact information at your previous job, so we can continue to send you the e-mail and snail information that is a core feature of your Member Benefit.
If you do not have your username and password, e-mail us at info@astdpittsburgh.org and we will be happy to provide your login information so you can change your information.
Is a membership/discounted rate available to corporations?
At the current time, we do not offer corporate memberships. All memberships are attached to the individual member.
A group corporate registration rate, however, may apply to select events.
I belong to the National ASTD but not the Pittsburgh chapter.
Can I attend events at the member rate?
Since we are de-unified from the National ASTD, you need to join ASTD Pittsburgh to sign up at the chapter Member rate.
What methods of payment will you accept for membership and event registrations?
You can apply for or renew your membership online, or sign up for any event, by credit card, check, or money order, or you can send a check with your paper application.
ASTD Pittsburgh takes every measure at our disposal to protect our membership from spam or unsolicited commercial solicitations. We do not share, sell, lease, or rent our distribution lists (either e-mail or surface mail) with anyone, under any circumstances.
If you are involved in an initiative that you feel would be valuable to our membership, or are aware of a seminar, training, initiative, or any news that you feel may be of interest to our membership, please e-mail your information to news@astdpittsburgh.org.
If we deem your information to be valuable for our members, we will e-mail it to the membership one time as part of a regular chapter e-mail, and/or post it as a News item for a time period that we deem appropriate.
